Paul Hoynes (@hoynsie) of cleveland.com writes that Justin Masterson and the Indians have shelved multiyear deal discussion and are working on a one year deal…

It appears discussions about a multiyear deal for Justin Masterson have been shelved while the Indians and his agent, Randy Rowley, work toward a one-year deal with or without the arbitration process.

Masterson’s arbitration hearing is scheduled for Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

There is a $3.75 million difference between what Masterson is seeking for the 2014 season and what the Indians have offered. It’s the biggest difference among any unsigned player who filed for arbitration this winter.

The 6-6, 250-pound Masterson filed at $11.8 million. The Indians countered at $8.05 million. The midpoint is $9.925 million.

John Tomase (@jtomase) of the Boston Herald writes that Jerry Remy deserves another chance to rebuild his life as he decides to return to Red Sox broadcasts…

The Jerry Remy who addressed a small group of reporters at NESN headquarters yesterday was the picture of devastation.

One of the other journalists in attendance said he had “sad eyes,” and it was a perfect description. The popular broadcaster has been living a nightmare since August, when his son was arrested and charged with killing the mother of their child. And the strain showed in every weary wrinkle creasing Remy’s face.

His voice quivered and his eyes reddened when he professed his profound sorrow for the family of the late Jennifer Martel. He wrung his hands while discussing his attempt to win custody of 5-year-old granddaughter Arianna Nicole.

The Associated Press on ESPN: Tim Flannery of San Francisco Giants gives $96K to Bryan Stow family.

Tim Flannery, the Giants’ third-base coach and an accomplished musician, presented the family of Bryan Stow with $96,000 over the weekend to help with his care as he continues to deal with traumatic injuries and brain damage from being severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Day 2011.

Flannery received a heartfelt thank-you voice mail from Stow, who still struggles to put thoughts and words together nearly three years after the attack.

And more money is still coming from recent silent auctions and further CD sales.

Flannery and his band, The Lunatic Fringe, recently concluded a series of four sold-out Northern California concerts benefiting Stow, while all dollars from purchases of Flannery’s 11th album, “Outside Lands,” released in November, go directly to Stow.
